Double Signature. A dialogue between design and artisanal excellence

Marcantonio
Alessandro Valentini

Marcantonio, aka Marcantonio Raimondi Malerba, artist and designer, was born in 1976 in Massa Lombarda (Ravenna), but has lived in Cesena for many years. He attended the Art Institute and the Academy of Fine Arts in Ravenna and, right after graduation, began working for theatres and collaborating with architects. In parallel with his artistic production, he soon started to create one-off design pieces. Gradually, his two careers began to intermingle and his design became enriched with artistic concepts. Connections between humans and nature are his favourite themes. He showcases both the dynamics and beauty of nature, presenting the attitude of humans towards it. He loves irony, which is his stylistic signature, and likes to think of his work as a direct continuation of what he did as a child, playing with everything he could find and creating what his mind imagined. His universe is populated with fantastic, dreamlike, surreal creatures. His other great muse is art, especially the work of the Surrealists and Dadaists. As well as with Seletti, Marcantonio has collaborated with Qeeboo, Scarlet Splendour, Natuzzi, Opinion Ciatti, Slamp, Mogg, Altreforme, Nodus, Scapin Collezioni and Anthropologie, creating iconic works. At the same time, he pursues a personal artistic path through self-production, with frequent forays into interior design.

Alessandro Valentini was born in Rome in 1976 and specialises in the restoration and reproduction of bronze and brass objects. Between 1996 and 2011, he worked alongside his father Maurizio and uncle Alberto in the “historic workshop” located at via Angelo Brunetti 30, the third generation of a family of Roman bronze artists. In 2012, he opened his own workshop and showroom at via Leonina 28 in the Monti district, in the centre of the Suburra, Rome’s oldest neighbourhood, between San Pietro in Vincoli and the Colosseum. The architects and designers who turn to the Valentini family for the restoration, reproduction or production of custom home furnishings made of precious and semi-precious metals find a connection between 18th-century Europe and international contemporary design in Alessandro’s new venture. In the workshop, 18th-century styles blend with the needs of modern living, and this strong link between old and new results in highly original artistic productions.
