Double Signature. A dialogue between design and artisanal excellence

Nicolò Giuliano

Sam Baron, born in France in 1976, holds a degree in Design from the Saint-étienne School of Fine Arts and a post-graduate degree from the School of Decorative Arts in Paris. He currently works as a freelance designer between France and Portugal, and he was in charge of Fabrica’s design department in Treviso. His work ranges from product design to interior design, from art direction to exhibition curation. Sam Baron questions himself through his objects and furniture. His rereading and reinterpretation of traditional craft or industrial know-how deeply question the usefulness of today’s material productions—their value, their use, their very existence. His creations are rooted in his artistic and functional research, through which he casts his gaze on our everyday life and contemporary time, without disregarding cultural and historical narratives. His works have been exhibited at many design events and fairs, including Maison&Objet and the Salon du Meuble in Paris, the Salone del Mobile in Milan, the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York, Tokyo Designers Block, the Saint Etienne Biennial and the Frankfurt Design Fair.

Nicolò Giuliano is the owner and master artisan of a renowned ceramic workshop in Sicily. Among the old shops of Santo Stefano di Camastra, in 1956, little Nicolò began his activity as a ceramist when he was just five years old. In 1970, he moved to Monreale (Palermo), on the slopes of the majestic Cathedral, where he started building his business, establishing a pottery school at the same time. Over time, the factory itself has become a museum, unique in its kind and in the entire region. Nicolò Giuliano’s activity has also developed in the direction of promoting the culture of ceramic art, also thanks to prestigious institutional commissions, awards and prizes. His production ranges from Moor’s heads to decorative tiles, from sculptures to the typical pine cones of Sicilian tradition, with all the vibrant patterns and magnificent colours rooted in Sicilian tradition, combining heritage and contemporaneity.
