Abissi
Abissi is a pair of blown-glass light sculptures that evoke organic and archetypal forms, drawing from an imaginative repertoire of lagoon creatures and organisms from the abyss, like marine fossils resurfacing from the depths of time. These presences seem to belong to a primordial dimension between biology and myth, natural memory and ancestral cosmogonies. The light radiating from the base of the sculpture permeates the glass surface, lighting up the murky lagoon, revealing traces of marine flora and limestone deposits to uncover a microcosm of colour and matter layers. The two sculptures enter into a dialogue with each other, based on balance and tension, as separate yet interdependent entities. The project lies on a critical continuum between material heritage and artistic experimentation, in which the Murano tradition serves as a space for research, interpretation and redefinition of contemporary sculptural language.
“What particularly fascinated me was Simone’s ability to master the material. Blown glass can be extremely unpredictable: throughout the process it is essential to capture exactly the right moment. Even the slightest movement affects both form and colour, so the work becomes a true dialogue between the material and the master craftsman. He was remarkably skilful in interpreting my idea, and I believe this is partly a result of his decades-long experience working with artists and designers.” (Roberto Sironi)
“Of the designer’s work I particularly appreciated the style, the quality of the ideas, the ability to innovate and the design versatility. On an artistic level, I found the nature of ‘four-handed project’ and the openness shown during the design phase very stimulating—an approach that allowed me to feel fully involved and valued for my contribution. Our collaboration proved extremely positive, based on dialogue and sharing, which made the work stimulating and productive.” (Simone Cenedese)
