The enduring appeal of time-honoured craftsmanship
This year, the aim is to highlight the quality of Milan’s manufacturing industries, represented by fifteen outstanding ateliers called upon to collaborate with as many international design firms. What is striking about the works on display is their absolute originality, both in terms of the virtuoso craftsmanship and formal experimentation, which in some cases has resulted in a hybridisation of traditional functions. If the spaceship teapot - complete with ladders and parabolas - created by Studio Job and Ganci Argenterie is a masterpiece of creative precision, France’s Materra-Matang and Stefano Villa have invented an ‘aromatic table’ that has a perfuming and purifying effect on rooms through its system of glass stills.
“The joint venture was a dynamic journey in which separate realms came together to create something greater than the sum of their parts,” comments Cristina Celestino. Her words sum up the essence of Doppia Firma to perfection. Thus her modular sofa made with leather goods maison Serapian afforded an opportunity to put herself to the test and dip her toe into the ‘architectural dimension’ of leather, incorporating folds, curves, weaves and geometric effects. The big names and new design talents include Agostino Iacurci, a young Italian artist who also has a keen following abroad. Working with Rosetta Gava, he has breathed new life into artistic glassmaking by decorating the Folding Panorama screen with cacti and multicoloured geometric shapes. In so doing, he once again shows us the timeless charm of ancient craftsmanship.
